Snowbird RV Checklist: Getting Your Rig Ready for a Yuma Winter

Every fall, Yuma and the Foothills fill up with snowbirds settling in for the season. If you're one of them, a bit of preparation on your rig makes the difference between a relaxing winter and a string of frustrating breakdowns. Here's a practical checklist built for the Yuma climate.

Before you settle in

Start with the systems the desert punishes most. Have the air conditioning checked — even in winter, Yuma has warm spells, and you'll want it healthy before the heat returns. Inspect the roof and seals, since a season parked under intense sun accelerates sealant failure. Test the refrigerator and appliances, which work harder in the heat. And check your batteries and electrical system, especially if you'll be on limited hookups.

Getting set up on site

Once you're parked, protect the rig from the sun that's about to work on it all season. Reflective covers on windows and the windshield cut interior heat dramatically. Confirm your park pedestal is delivering good voltage — low voltage is common on crowded pedestals and hard on your AC and appliances. And know where your water shutoff is, in case a plumbing leak shows up.

Mid-season check-in

A lot can happen over a long stay. Many snowbirds schedule a mid-season once-over to catch anything developing — a seal starting to fail, an AC losing capacity, a battery going weak — before it becomes an emergency. It's a lot easier to handle a small issue on a mild December day than a dead AC in a March heat wave.
