Few things are more frustrating than climbing into your RV and finding nothing works. The good news is that RV electrical problems follow a logic, and knowing a little about how the system is set up helps you (or your tech) find the fault fast. Here's a plain-English guide.
This is the key thing to understand: an RV runs on two separate systems. The 12-volt DC system (from your batteries) powers the lights, water pump, furnace fan, slides, jacks, and most controls. The 120-volt AC system (from shore power or the generator) runs the outlets, the AC, the microwave, and the converter that charges your batteries. When something's dead, the first question is always: which system?
If nothing works, suspect the 12V side first — a dead or disconnected battery, a tripped main fuse or breaker, or a battery disconnect switch that's off. If your lights and pump work but the outlets and AC don't, you've likely lost 120V shore power — check the pedestal breaker, your cord and connections, and the RV's main breaker. If the batteries won't hold a charge while you're plugged in, the converter may have failed.
Look for the obvious first: is the battery disconnect on? Are the pedestal and RV breakers set? Is the shore cord fully seated? Is the battery actually charged and its terminals clean and tight? These simple things cause a surprising share of "no power" calls. Beyond that, electrical work gets into voltage testing that's easy to get wrong — and RV wiring faults can be a fire risk.
