RV Roof Maintenance in the Desert: Stop Leaks Before They Start

Ask any RV tech what causes the most expensive damage they see, and roof leaks will be near the top of the list. In a place like Yuma, with its intense, year-round sun, roof maintenance isn't optional — it's the cheapest insurance you can buy for your rig.

Why desert sun wrecks RV roofs

The membrane on most RV roofs holds up reasonably well, but the sealant around everything that penetrates the roof — vents, the AC, skylights, antennas, and the seams — does not. UV dries it out, it shrinks and cracks, and water finds the gaps. Yuma's sun degrades that sealant much faster than a milder climate would, which is why a roof that was fine two years ago can be leaking now.

What to check, and how often

Get up top (safely) and look at the sealant at least once a year here, and ideally twice. You're looking for cracking, lifting edges, gaps, and any spot that looks dried out or chalky. Inside, watch for stains on the ceiling, soft spots, or a musty smell — all signs water is already getting in. Catching a failing seal early means a quick reseal instead of tearing into a wall.

Reseal before it leaks

Resealing failing spots is inexpensive and fast, especially compared to what comes next if you ignore it. A neglected leak leads to soft floors, rotted framing, and delamination, where the outer wall separates from the structure. That's a major repair. A roof reseal now avoids water damage repair later.

Perfect timing for snowbirds

If you're wintering in Yuma, it's an ideal time to have the roof checked and resealed while the rig is sitting still. We do it on site — no need to move the coach. An annual RV inspection that includes the roof and seals is one of the smartest things a desert RVer can do. Reach out and we'll take a look.
