RV Generator Won’t Start in Yuma, AZ? Common Causes & Fixes

In Yuma, an RV generator is not a luxury, it is life support. When the winter-visitor parks fill up and the summer heat rolls off the Sonoran Desert, that generator is what runs the roof air, keeps the fridge cold, and powers everything when you are boondocking out past the Foothills or dry-camping down toward the sand dunes. So when you turn the key and nothing happens, it is more than an inconvenience. Here is how we diagnose a no-start Onan or portable generator in the field, and what tends to cause it in this particular climate.

Start with the three things a generator must have

Every generator, whether it is a built-in Onan in a Class A or a portable unit outside a fifth wheel, needs the same three things to fire: fuel, spark or ignition, and clean air, plus a charged start battery to crank it. Ninety percent of the no-starts we see in Yuma trace back to one of those, and you can check them in order before anyone talks about expensive repairs. A generator that cranks but will not catch is usually a fuel or air problem. A generator that will not even crank, that just clicks or stays silent, is almost always a battery or connection problem.

The Yuma battery problem

This is the number one culprit here, and it is worth understanding why. Built-in generators start from the RV's chassis or house battery, and desert heat is brutal on batteries. Yuma summers regularly push past 110 degrees, and sustained heat cooks the electrolyte out of lead-acid batteries and shortens their life dramatically compared to a mild climate. On top of that, snowbirds who park a rig from April to October often come back to a battery that has sat discharged in the heat for months, which is the fastest way to kill it. If your generator only clicks or does nothing when you hit start, check the battery voltage first. A resting battery should read around 12.6 volts; anything in the 12-volt-or-below range is suspect, and a battery that drops hard under crank is done. Also check the terminals, because desert dust and corrosion build a resistive film that can stop enough current from reaching the starter.

Stale fuel and the varnish problem

The second big Yuma cause is old fuel. A generator that sits through a long, hot summer ends up with gasoline that has oxidized into varnish and gum, and that residue clogs the tiny jets in the carburetor. The classic pattern is a generator that cranks strongly, maybe coughs, but will not run, or one that starts and immediately dies. Ethanol-blended fuel makes it worse because it attracts moisture and separates. If your rig sat all summer, the fix is often draining the old fuel, cleaning or rebuilding the carburetor, and refilling with fresh gas. This is exactly the kind of repair that is far cheaper to prevent, by running the generator under load for a couple of hours every few weeks even in storage, or treating the fuel with a stabilizer before you leave for the season.

Don't forget the simple stuff

Before assuming the worst, rule out the easy causes we drive out to fix more often than you would think. A low oil level will stop many generators cold, because they have a low-oil shutdown sensor designed to protect the engine, and that sensor can also false-trigger if the RV is parked on a slope out in the desert. The fuel valve may be closed, or the tank may be below the pickup, since some coaches stop feeding the generator once the main tank drops to a quarter to keep you from stranding the chassis. A tripped breaker on the generator itself, a bad start switch, or a blown fuse in the start circuit are all quick checks. And on portable units, the choke position and a fouled spark plug are the usual suspects. Working through these in order saves money and often gets you running the same day.

Carbon monoxide: the safety point that matters

One warning worth stating plainly, especially for winter visitors running generators overnight in packed Yuma RV resorts: never run a generator where the exhaust can reach the cabin or a neighbor's rig. Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless, and the CDC's guidance on generator safety is blunt about the danger of running one in or near an enclosed space. Make sure your CO detector works, keep exhaust pointed away and downwind, and if a generator has been running rough it is worth having the exhaust and mounting checked for leaks.

Heat, altitude, and how the desert loads a generator

There is a reason generators feel weaker in a Yuma summer than they did up north, and it is not your imagination. Heat reduces the air density an engine breathes and forces the generator to work harder while its own cooling is already fighting a 110-degree ambient. At the same time your demand spikes, because two roof air conditioners running flat out against desert heat is one of the heaviest loads a coach ever asks its generator to carry. A unit that is marginal, dirty, or slightly out of tune will start hard, bog, or shut down on overload precisely when you need it most. Keeping the cooling fins and air intake clear of the fine blowing dust that gets into everything out here, changing the oil on schedule with the right weight for high heat, and not asking a small generator to run both AC units at once all make the difference between reliable power and a mid-afternoon shutdown.

Dust deserves its own mention. Yuma's blowing dust and monsoon haze clog air filters faster than almost anywhere, and a starving, dirty filter will make a healthy generator run rough and hard to start. It is a five-minute check that we find neglected on a large share of the no-start calls we run, and swapping a cheap filter often brings a struggling unit right back to life.
